Itinerary

The journey begins in Jakarta, Indonesia’s largest city and its bustling capital. After being met at the airport and given VIP arrival assistance, you will be transferred on to your city hotel, where the rest of the day is free to relax and enjoy at your leisure. Mandarin Oriental Jakarta

Following breakfast this morning you will be driven back out to the airport for the onward flight to Semarang, the largest city in Central Java. A private, air-conditioned car will then be waiting on arrival to transfer you on to Magelang, where you will spend the next two nights enjoying the unparalleled luxury of a five-star resort set within 22 hectares of spectacular natural beauty. Mesastila Resort & Spa

Once a working coffee plantation, the resort is home to quite a remarkable collection of antiques and buildings that include Central Java’s iconic colonial railway station and the historic Joglo villas. Today provides an opportunity to soak up the captivating ambiance of this extraordinary setting, enjoying the mountain landscapes and the tropical gardens, or perhaps availing yourself of the resident Turkish spa or any of the numerous in-house activities on offer. Mesastila Resort & Spa

After a morning at leisure you will depart for the picturesque setting of the Menorah Hills. Nestling amongst thick teak forests, your home for this evening is set against the magnificent backdrop of the Borobudur Temple and its surrounding peaks. Once settled in you'll spend the afternoon enjoying a visit to the charming village of Candirejo, which you can choose to travel to by traditional horse-drawn buggy or bicycle. The excursion ends with a lesson in Indonesian Gamelan music, before returning to the resort to relax. Plataran Borobudur Resort & Spa

Leaving the hotel before dawn, you'll head first for the stunning site of Borobudur, home to the largest Buddhist temple in the world. A spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll watch the sunrise over the monuments, before heading on to visit a traditional Kris-maker. An asymmetrical dagger with a distinctive blade, the Kris has long been steeped in traditional folklore and mysticism. Later you then continue on to the 9th century temple compound of Prambanan, home to the largest and finest Hindu temple complex in the country. The impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site is identifiable by its towering and pointed architectural design. This evening, you will watch a Ramayana Ballet Performance, with the illuminated temples as a backdrop, as you dine on an Indonesian dinner. The ballet tells an epic love story through graceful dance movements set to an orchestra of traditional Javanese instruments. The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta - Mgallery By Sofitel

The morning begins with a train journey through the volcanic landscapes of Java, east towards the town of Mojokerto. A major hub on the Yogyakarta-Surabaya mainline, on arrival you will be met off the train and driven on to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where you will stop to view the Madakaripura Waterfall, the highest in Java and the second highest in Indonesia. From here you then continue through the classic Javanese landscapes to Bromo. Plataran Bromo

One of Indonesia's most iconic settings, Mount Bromo provides the backdrop for this morning's, hopefully, unforgettable sunrise. Leaving the hotel early, you'll travel by private jeep to the rim of Mount Penanjakan, in time to watch the dawn break across one of the most active volcanic landscapes on earth. Crossing the great Sand Sea of Laotian Pasir you'll then climb to the top of Mount Bromo, returning to the hotel later to freshen up before departing for Banyuwangi and the less-visited Ijen Plateau. Ijen Resort And Villas

The dramatic Ijen Plateau provides the setting for this morning's spectacular journey to the aqua blue waters of Mount Ijen's crater lake. Passing through plantations and villages, the 4WD transfer drops you at the start of a 90-minute trek up into a breathtaking volcanic wonderland. The views from the top are extraordinary and local sulphur miners are often a regular sight along the journey. Continuing on to Banyuwangi's port from here, you then take the short ferry ride across to the island of Bali. Plataran Menjangan

A day enjoying the delights of the West Bali National Park sees you heading by boat into the calm waters off the north-west tip of the island. The uninhabited island of Menjangan offers one of the best-preserved coral reefs anywhere in the area, providing an idyllic location for a morning's snorkelling. Home to a staggering array of marine life, the island is also famed for its resident deer (after which the island is named). Enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to Bali. Plataran Menjangan

Today is free to enjoy more of your tropical hideaway. Lying within the protective embrace of the national park, the resort offers an array of activities to make the most of this idyllic spot. You can trek through the surrounding jungle with a local guide, kayak amongst the mangroves or enjoy a sunset cruise. Of course, you may just prefer to relax on the 360-degree Ocean Observation Deck, or take a rejuvenating spa overlooking the azure waters. Plataran Menjangan

Departing the hotel after breakfast you will take in some fine views of Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan, before enjoying a traditional canoe ride across the tranquil waters. After a visit to the important Hindu water temple of Ulun Danu, situated within the serene embrace of Lake Beratan, journey’s end then sees you amongst the island's central foothills, enjoying the traditions and culture of Ubud, Bali's spiritual heart. Retire to your beautiful pool villa and rest before your final full day in Bali. Komoneka Bisma

Home to world-class restaurants, traditional artisans, spiritual centres and all that is best about Balinese culture, the city of Ubud lies in the cultural heartland of the island. This morning you will visit a Brahman family who lives in the village of Mas near the former royal residence and artist town of Ubud. They are all descendants of the holy priests who brought the Hinduism to Bali in the 9th century and will welcome you in their traditional Balinese home, where you have the opportunity to learn and participate in one of the most unique, yet for Balinese most common daily activity – the making of the traditional offerings. A very short drive from here will bring you to another Brahman House of the Pedanda, the High-Priest of Mas village, where you will see how the larger Gebogan is carried to the temple to be blessed and a donation is given with prayers to the ancient family temple that serves around 800 people of the village. Once all rituals are concluded, the women will take the Gebogan back home and the food is shared amongst family and friends – you. Enjoy the traditional lunch, which includes chicken, rice, sambal and fruits before you say goodbye to your new Balinese friends. Enjoy this afternoon at leisure and reflect on this morning's teachings. Komoneka Bisma

Your time is your own today, until transferring to the airport for the onward flight.
