Itinerary

Arriving in the North Sumatran capital today you will be met at the airport and transferred on to your hotel.

Following breakfast this morning you'll enjoy a short guided tour through the city, taking in some of its historical highlights. Filled with reminders of the city's colonial past, Medan is also home to the historic Tjong A Fie Mansion, the Maimoon Palace and the Great Mosque, whose Dutch creator incorporated aspects of Middle Eastern, Indian and Spanish elements into its design. Leaving the city behind you then drive on to Bukit Lawang, travelling through a scenic landscape scattered with plantations and local villages. Ecolodge Bukit Lawang

An early start sees you setting off into the jungle on foot, heading towards what was once the Bohorok Orangutan Centre, where park rangers still keep a close eye on the rehabilitated apes, as well as the resident gibbons and Thomas leaf monkeys. Starting with a steep ascent through the rainforests of the Gunung Leuser National Park, the spectacular landscapes provide some breathtaking views and a chance to learn more about jungle life. A picnic lunch will then be followed by a gentle tube float along the Bohorok River. Ecolodge Bukit Lawang

Departing Bukit Lawang after breakfast, your day begins with a drive to the banks of the Bingei River, where you will join an expert rafting team for an exhilarating white water rafting adventure. Spectacularly scenic, the 1 ½-hour journey takes you through a series of grade II and III rapids before depositing you back on shore in time to enjoy a traditional lunch. Continuing on to the cooler mountain town of Berastagi this afternoon you'll then head into a landscape famed for its fruit markets and volcanoes. Grand Mutiara

Another early start sees you undertaking the short climb up to Gunung Sibayak, one of Indonesia's most accessible volcanic peaks, where the views from the summit offer up some stunning panoramas across towards Mount Sinabung and the town of Berastagi. Descending back to the road you'll then drive on to the village of Dokan, home to the staunchly traditional Batak Karo people, before taking in the Sipiso-piso Waterfall and the impressive views over Lake Toba. Later this afternoon you will catch the ferry across to Samosir Island. Tabo Cottages

Samosir Island sits in the heart of Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in the world. Today you will have an opportunity to learn more of this remarkable setting and its traditional Batak culture. The day begins with a visit to the fascinating Batak Toba village of Ambarita, once a centre for ritualistic execution and cannibalism. Next you'll visit Simanindo, where you will enjoy some traditional dancing, before moving on to explore the ancient tombs of the Batak kings at Tomok. Tabo Cottages

After crossing the lake to Parapat this morning you then continue by road to the new Silangit International Airport in Siborong-Borong. From here you will take the flight on to the Javan city of Yogyakarta, travelling by way of Medan. Considered to be Indonesia's cultural heart, the city lies just 30 kilometres to the south of Mount Merapi and on arrival you will be transferred to your hotel for a three-night stay. D'omah Boutique Village Resort

Renowned as a centre for classic Javanese art and handicrafts, Yogyakarta is the only Indonesian royal city still ruled by a Sultan. Today's sightseeing begins with a visit to the Sultan's 18th century palace, before you move on to explore the royal pleasure gardens of the Taman Sari. Heading out of the city you'll then call on the traditional craftsmen of Kaliopak village, specialists in the production of Java's famous shadow puppets, before spending the afternoon amongst the impressive UNESCO temple complex of Prambanan. D'omah Boutique Village Resort

The morning begins with a train journey through the volcanic landscapes of Java, heading east towards the town of Mojokerto, a major hub on the Yogyakarta-Surabaya mainline. On arrival you will be met off the train and driven on to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where you will stop to view the Madakaripura Waterfall, the highest in Java and the second highest in Indonesia, before continuing through the classic Javanese landscapes to Bromo. Jiwa Jawa Bromo

One of Indonesia's most iconic settings, Mount Bromo provides the backdrop for this morning's, hopefully, unforgettable sunrise. Leaving the hotel early you'll travel by private jeep to the rim of Mount Penanjakan, in time to watch the dawn break across one of the most active volcanic landscapes on earth. Crossing the great Sand Sea of Laotian Pasir you'll then climb to the top of Mount Bromo, returning to the hotel later to freshen up before departing by train for Banyuwangi and the stunning Ijen Plateau. Ijen Resort And Villas

The dramatic Ijen Plateau provides the setting for this morning's spectacular journey to the aqua blue waters of Mount Ijen's crater lake. Passing through plantations and villages, the 4WD transfer drops you at the start of a 90-minute trek up into a breathtaking volcanic wonderland. The views from the top are extraordinary and local sulphur miners are often a regular sight along the journey. Continuing on to Banyuwangi's port from here, you then take the short ferry ride across to the island of Bali. Plataran Menjangan

A day enjoying the delights of the West Bali National Park sees you heading by boat into the calm waters off the north-west tip of the island. The uninhabited island of Menjangan offers one of the best-preserved coral reefs anywhere in the area, providing an idyllic location for a morning's snorkelling. Home to a staggering array of marine life, the island is also famed for its resident deer (after which the island is named). Enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to Bali. Plataran Menjangan

Departing the hotel after breakfast this morning you will take in some fine views of Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan (weather permitting), before enjoying a traditional canoe ride across the tranquil waters. After a visit to the important Hindu water temple of Ulun Danu, situated within the serene embrace of Lake Beratan, you will then be transferred to your hotel or to the airport for your onward flight.
